Pillow Review - Vivetique Organic Contour Pillow
This is, of course, long overdue. I have thought long and hard about this review, have started drafts to only toss them and start over. Since it is actually almost time for me to post my NEXT pillow review, I'm just going to go with my gut here and crank this one out. I should preface this by saying that I am decidedly NOT a contour pillow person. Just to bring you up to speed, contour pillows were pretty much the brain child and, at the very least, perfected by the memory foam companies in order to attract a more "ergonomically minded" customer. The organic folk, in response, started offering their versions - some of them quite unique - of this concept. In theory, the pillow is supposed to offer support for your neck in any sleeping position except stomach. The pillows generally have a high side for side sleepers or low side for back sleepers. The problem here is that it makes no accomodation for the sleeper that prefers both or, in some cases, all 3. So here we go: The pillow is rather small, measuring just 19 x 12 in standard size - and for the record that was the size that was tested. The pillow is also available in queen, which extends the length about 5 inches but not the width. It is a solid core natural latex pillow with a certified organic cotton knit cover that is zippered and removable on the underside. The cover is washable. The tall side has a loft of approximately 4 1/2 inches, while the short side comes in at a scant 3. To put it mildly, the month of September could not end fast enough as far as this pillow was concerned. I found the thing completely uncomfortable in nearly every position I tried - including turning the pillow upside down. It is firm, and even with my big head it made barely a dent in the latex core. Being solid latex, there is no chance to reshape or in any way modify the pillow for the user. I did not notice a significant latex odor. As with any pillow, you need to consider the size of the person trying it and know that not all pillows work for all people. Being rather broad shouldered, there was just no way this was going to work with me sleeping on my side. On my back was acceptable, on the short side, but since I do not sleep that way, this was not a positive in my opinion. For someone that is a back sleeper or has narrower shoulders, then I could see this pillow working - although I would have to say that you should have some experience with contour pillows and really - and I mean REALLY - like them before investing in this pillow. As pillows go, this one really is an investment. So that will do it. Sorry if I offended some but this is pretty much the tall and short of it as far as this pillow goes. Until next time, sweet dreams! 2008-10-28 21:51:27 GMT
