Pillow Review - Natura Dream Mate
photo

This is an easy one.

Maybe it was a reflection of just how happy I was to move on to another pillow or the fact that this just really was a good one, either way this pillow really was a treat to sleep on.

The Natura Dream Mate Pillow is a granulated latex pillow with such a fine grind that it produces a soft, down-like feel with no lumps.  The latex used is from Dunlopillo, the inventors of the stuff in 1929, and has a 60% natural content - which should signal to you that this is not an organic pillow, it is natural.

The outer fabric is 100% unbleached cotton, retaining the natural undied look of the cotton straight from the weave.  The fabric is then quilted with a small amount of wool - which Natura refers to as "Natura Smart Wool".

The pillow was tested in Standard Size, which has a resting loft of about 5 to 5 1/2 inches.  The fill allows for molding and shaping, so loft is easily varried.  There is no zipper or access to the fill, the end is sewn shut with a surged seam.  The pillow is also available in Queen and King sizes.

Let's start with the fill.  Natura's granulated latex is so fine that you feel no lumps - and I mean none - either when pressing on it with your hand or sleeping on it.  The one drawback over down is that latex is much heavier, so don't expect a lightweight pillow.  Still, the feel is very similar.

As you may know from some of my other reviews, latex as a material stays the cleanest of any other pillow fill.  That in and of itself gives this pillow a sanitary life at least twice that of standard pillows.

Now to the wool.  The thin layer of wool helps to provide temperature insulation and prevents the pillow from "sleeping hot" - a complaint often heard with memory foam and sometimes, although rare, with latex.  I never once found it necessary to flip this pillow to the "cool" side during the night.

The natural cotton cover is a bit rough as the fabric has had only minimal finishing.  While not organic, it does look the part with a very natural cotton finish.

On yet another sanitary note, it seems that Natura tried to sell this pillow to Sears Canada on the claim that it was mold, mildew and dust mite resistent, as well as an unfriendly environment for bacteria.  Sears Canada decided to test this claim for themselves, handing the pillow off to an independant lab.  The result?  It's all true!

Priced at under $40 in standard size from most retailers, this may very will be the biggest bargain in pillows out there.  Oh, sure, you can go to Wal Mart and find a less expensive pillow, but you are not going to get near the longevity and sanitary life out of it that you would from the Natura Dream Mate.

End result - this pillow is highly recommended, both for comfort and price!

See you next time!
